Oat is such a wonderful ingredient. Slightly boring, we know, especially in porridge, but nonetheless full of incredible benefits.

As a food, it’s a great prebiotic, feeding your gut microbiome and helping it produce useful metabolites. It boasts a big amount of fibres, and it’s also the most sustainable plant milk available.

As a skin ingredient, it’s been used forever for its soothing properties. A cup of oats in your bathtub is great to soothe the skin for example.

But did you know oat oil? It’s using only the lipids of the grain. We use a raw unrefined oil so that’s it’s full of different lipids, all of them great for the skin barrier. The most interesting ones inside are very high levels of linoleic acid, Omega-6 and Omega-9 fatty acids, phospholipids and glycolipids. Complicated names, but all these different lipids will reinforce the barrier function of the skin, thanks to their similitude to skin lipids. It’s great for people with sensitive skin or eczema, and that is why colloidal oat has been used forever on these skin conditions.

You can learn more about the skin barrier and how to reinforce it in this article.
